Astle still unfit; Surgery likely

Sunday, February 8 2004

Nathan Astle has been left out of New Zealand's ODI squad to play against South Africa at home, following another injury, this time to his right knee.

Earlier this week, Astle failed to pass a fitness test ahead of the State Shield Final in New Zealand between Canterbury and Central Districts.

Astle has been diagnosed as having cartilage damage in his right knee, and will most likely need a surgery.

Astle had been undergoing treatment on his left knee, after injuring it during New Zealand's tour to India. It kept him out of the following home and away series against Pakistan, but he had responded well to treatment before trouble with the other knee started.

South Africa arrive in New Zealand today (Sunday) and play the first of the six ODIs on Friday 13 Feb.

The six match ODI series will be followed by three Tests. Astle's inclusion in that series will largely depend on whether he will need a surgery or not, and if he doesn't how much time it will take for him to return to full fitness.
