Venkat retires from umpiring

Sunday, February 8 2004

58-year old Indian umpire Shrinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, better known simply as Venkat, has announced his retirement from the international elite panel of umpires.

Over an umpiring career of 10 years, Venkat stood in 75 Tests and 52 ODIs.

Venkat has chosen the 2nd Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in Kandy, starting from 16 March, as his final Test officiating.

Venkat may umpire in ODIs, but it largely depends on his choice and his nomination by the BCCI as their second tier umpire.

Venkat, who was an off-spinner and part of the famous spin quartet of India, played 57 Tests and 15 ODIs for his country in the 70s and early 80s.

During his cricketing career, apart from being a national player and an umpire, Venkat has also managed the Indian team.
