Carib Beer Cup 2004
Round 6

Day 2 West Indies 'B' vs Guyana at Georgetown, Guyana.

Having dismissed Guyana for 419 from the overnight 266/5, the West Indies fought back purposefully to 96/2 at the close of day two. Chanderpaul (18) and Daesrath (56) were the overnight batsmen leading into the second day's play, and Bennett got the former caught behind as he tried to cut him.

McGarrell (4) fell soon after to Washington, but the recalled Mahendra Nagamootoo (58) batted responsibly with Daesrath and added 55 runs for the eighth wicket. Daesrath (dropped twice at slip) was eventually run out and Vishal Nagamootoo was LBW to Bennett the next ball - 353/9, but the controversial Rayon Griffith (20 not out) and Mahendra Nagamootoo lifted the score to its eventual resting place of 419 all out. Jason Bennett finished with 4/83.

Ramdass (16) was the first to go in the reply, LBW to Nagamootoo. Shawn Findlay (14) joined captain Jason Haynes (40 not out) and hit a couple of boundaries through cover until he was well-caught with a return catch to McGarrell. At 55/2, Danza Hyatt came to the crease and stroked three fours, cracking a six off Nagamootoo to close unbeaten on 20.

Day 2 Kenya v the Windward Islands at Kingstown, St. Vincent.

The Windward Islands continued their dominance over Kenya as they ensured that the visitors would have absolutely no joy on day two of their sixth round game. No wickets fell on the day and the Windwards improved their 4/0 to a record 281/0.

Despite rain ending play ten overs early, the Windward openers managed to get good work in, mostly due to the aggression of discarded West Indies opener, Devon Smith. The left-handed batsman, following on from 159 in his previous innings, stroked a brilliant unbeaten 169 to absolutely dominate the 281-run partnership, beating the previous Windwards best of 142.

At the other end is Romel Currency, who has played much the supporting role to reach 92 not out and get into sight of his maiden FC hundred. The innings progresses after he was dropped by Tikolo on 31.

Smith reached his hundred from 210 balls with five fours gracing it. At the close of play, however, he has faced 279 balls with ten fours.

Former Kenya captain, Maurice Odumbe was unable to participate with the ball on the day, as he was off the field nursing a badly bruised toe.

Kenya 1st innings 152 ao (82.2 overs)
(Hitesh Modi 33, Kennedy Obuya 28, Collins Obuya 23)
(Fernix Thomas 8/28)

Windward Islands 1st innings 281/0 (87 overs)
(Devon Smith 169 not out, Romel Currency 92 not out)

Day 2 Trinidad and Tobago v Jamaica at St. Elizabeth, Jamaica.

A purposeful bowling performance couple with some ordinary batting ensured that visitors Trinidad and Tobago grabbed six first innings points in their game against Jamaica. Following up on dismissing their hosts for a paltry 147, the Trinbagonians replied with 76/1 at stumps - a lead of 158.

The overnight batsmen are Daren and Sherwin Ganga. The former started poorly, leaving alone bad balls and seemingly more intent to stick around than actually score some runs. Still, he ended the day on a creditable 39. His brother Sherwin was better and looked rather positive in intent whilst compiling 26.

Both batsmen have been dropped once. Jerome Taylor missed a difficult caught-and-bowled opportunity of Daren, before eventually having to go off the field due to back difficulties, and Sherwin was missed by Tamar Lambert at silly midoff, off offspinner Brown. Thus far Dave Bernard Jr. (1/15) is the lone Jamaica wicket-taker.

Earlier Jamaica resumed on 9/0. Openers Parchment (32) and Kepple (8) advanced the score to 40, when Dwayne Bravo (2/30) struck his first blow. Ultimately he accounted for both openers and Lambert (5) was caught behind off Emrit, then Pagon (7) was bowled by Jaggernauth - 69/4. Lone 2004 centurion for Jamaica, Carlton Baugh Jr. was run out before he could score.

Dave Bernard Jr. looked in fine form as he struck four boundaries in his 24. Ultimately it took an entertaining unbeaten 31 from bowler Andrew Richardson to lift the score to 147. He faced 48 balls and hit three fours and two sixes.

Pace bowler Theodore Modeste was forced off the field for most of play after he injured his hand in the process of fielding.

Trinidad and Tobago 1st innings 229 ao (81.4 overs)
(Aneil Kanhai 111, Sherwin Ganga 64)
(Gareth Breese 3/35, Dave Bernard Jr. 3/57)

Jamaica 1st innings 147 ao (58.2 overs)
(Brenton Parchment 32, Andrew Richardson 31 not out)
(Reyad Emrit 3/24, Amit Jaggernauth 3/36, Dwayne Bravo 2/30)

Trinidad and Tobago 2nd innings 76/1 (34 overs)
(Daren Ganga 39 not out, Sherwin Ganga 26 not out)
(Dave Bernard Jr. 1/15)

Day 2 Barbados v the Leeward Islands at Amalie, US Virgin Islands.

Barbados retained the Carib Beer Cup when they took first innings points on day two of their sixth-round pairing with Leeward Islands. Starting the day on 356/7, Sherwin Campbell advanced to 211 not out and Barbados to 432 all out.

Facing the massive total, the Leewards lost Adams (0) LBW to the second ball of the innings, without playing a shot. Sylvester Joseph wasted no time in playing shots, but Shane Jeffers (0) was caught behind off Bradshaw in the sixth over. New batsman Tonito Willett (43) added 39 for the third wicket with Joseph, when the latter was out for 24, offering no stroke to Suleiman Benn's arm ball.

Carl Tuckett (46) joined Willett and the two put on a further 47 runs in quick time. Bradshaw accounted for Willett (who faced 70 balls and hit seven fours in his stay), Wilden Cornwall was run out for 6 and Jason Williams was comprehensively bowled by Ryan Hinds for a duck - 107/3 to 114/6. Here another partnership formed. This time Chaka Hodge assisted Tuckett and the score progressed to 157 where the seventh wicket fell.

Benn trapped Tuckett in front, ending his 90-ball stay at the crease, and he had Virgil Browne bowled without offering a stroke to the very next ball. He then completed the tenth hat-trick in modern era West Indian domestic competition, as he had Jeremy caught close in. The Leewards were dismissed for 161 and asked to follow on.

Ian Bradshaw made early inroads, having Alex Adams (13) and Shane Jeffers (12) caught behind within a run of each other, before Sylvester Joseph (24 not out) and Tonito Willett (21 not out) steadied the score to 76/2 at stumps. The Leewards still trail by 195 runs with two days to go and just eight second innings wickets in hand.

Barbados' title triumph is their 19th in regional competition.
