Central win State Shield

Sunday, February 8 2004

A superb batting display by Ross Taylor 95 (86), Jamie How 92 (113) and Craig Spearman 85 (48) took Central through to 354/5.

Craig Spearman and Jamie How got Central off to a hard hitting aggressive start forcing Chris Cairns into a number of early bowling changes. One memorable over saw Spearman take 30 runs off Paul Wiseman with some meaty blows into the crowd.

Even after Spearman was dismissed Central continued the momentum through out the innings and finished up with the second highest domestic one day total ever.

Chris Cairns was the pick of the Canterbury bowlers in taking 2-66 off 10 overs.

In reply Canterbury lost wickets regularly and were never able to form any substantial partnerships thanks to some good line and length bowling. Even some lower order hitting from Paul Wiseman in partnership with Chris Harris couldn’t take Canterbury home.

Central Districts wrapped up the State Shield with Chris Martin being bowled by Andrew Schwass for 0.
