Klusener in ODI side, Hall injured

Wednesday, January 21 2004

After an absence of 10 months, Lance Klusener has been re-called to the South African ODI side for the first two matches of the five match series against the West Indies starting on 25th January.

The all-rounder was dropped from the side in April '03, after the newly appointed captain Greame Smith had described him as a "disruptive influence" in the team.

Klusener had threatened the national board with legal action for lost earnings, but agreed not to press the charges following a sort of re-conciliation with the board.

Klusener's inclusion was also helped by the fact that all-rounder Andrew Hall has been ruled out to play any cricket for the next six weeks.

Hall injured his back in the 4th and final Test Match against the Windies at Centurion Park. After bowling only two balls in the first over, he had to leave the field due to a back problem. An MRI scan done later revealed a large lateral disc prolapse on the left side of his back. He underwent surgery immediately, which was successful. Hall will miss the entire ODI series.

Other notable inclusions are left-handed batsman Ashwell Prince, all-rounder Albie Morkel, and Morne van Wyk. Morkel is the only un-capped player in the side. His inclusion was made after he impressed the selectors with a strong score of 132 against the Windies in a tour match.
