Robin Singh retires

Sunday, January 25 2004

Former Indian all-rounder and one-day specialist Robin Singh has announced his retirement from both first class and international cricket.

Singh, aged 40, was born in Trinidad, West Indies, before his family moved to India and settled in Chennai.

Singh started playing first class cricket for Tamil Nadu, after finishing his studies. He was called up to the Indian squad in 1989 for an ODI tournament against the West Indies, but after playing only one match on the tour, spent seven years out of the team.

After being recalled to the Indian team in the latter half of the 90s, Singh started featuring regularly as an all-rounder who bats at no. 6 and bowls medium-pacers during the middle overs of an innings. He played 136 ODIs, in which he scored 2,336 runs and took 69 wickets. His last ODI appearance was against Australia in 2001.

Singh played his only Test match for India against Zimbabwe in 1998.

Right now, Singh is the coach of the India Under-19 squad. Singh has been busy preparing the youngsters for the Under-19 World Cup, starting next month in Bangladesh.
