WI beat SA 'A' comfortably

Saturday, January 24 2004

The West Indies put forth an impressive fielding effort against a strong South Africa 'A' to emerge victorious in the lone warmup game before the ODI series which kicks off on Sunday. Disciplined bowling saw to it that the McKenzie-led Africans were dismissed for a paltry 165 chasing 231 for victory.

At their stint at the crease, the West Indies reached 230/8 in regulation. Once again leading the charge was Chris Gayle (61) with Dwayne Smith (35) and Lara (37) chipping in as well. Jacobs then worked his way to an unbeaten 40 from 36 balls to see his team to the workable score.

Justin Ontong (2/27) was the star with the ball for the South Africans, and Boje (returning from injury) and Ngam also took a pair of wickets each. In the chase, Neil McKenzie (51) and Martin van Jaarsveld (31) were the only significant scorers, with Dillon, Bradshaw, Gayle, Hurley and Powell claiming a wicket each and Ravi Rampaul finishing with the outstanding figures of 2/23 from his allotted 10 overs.
