Clarke to join Hampshire

Wednesday, December 3 2003

Rising Australian star Michael Clarke is to join Hampshire for the 2004 season. Batsman Clarke has impressed in his 10 one day internationals to date, scoring 327 runs at an average of 65.40. He also boasts a first class average of 37.

Clarke will replace New South Wales teammate Simon Katich, who enjoyed an excellent season with the south coast side in 2003. He will also link up with veteran leg spinner Shane Warne, who returns to captain Hampshire after serving out his one year ban.

Clarke himself bowls some handy left arm spin - he has captured 8 wickets in those one day internationals at an average of 24.75 - and is described as an excellent fielder.

Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said "We are naturally delighted that Michael has agreed to be our overseas player next season,"

"He is undoubtedly one of the brightest new stars of international cricket and we are certain that his considerable playing style will prove highly popular at The Rose Bowl."

Hampshire team manager Paul Terry was equally enthused:

"Michael has begun to make a significant mark already at the top level with Australia. I'm sure the Hampshire supporters will warm to the brilliance of his play."

Still only 22, Clarke has been tipped to replace Steve Waugh in the Australian test side (this could happen before he arrives in England now that Waugh has decided to retire after the current India series), and his Bevan-esque stats from his early international career do little to play down those expectations.
