Indian ODI Squad for Pakistan

Friday, March 5 2004

Without Anil Kumble and Ajit Agarkar due to injury, India still boast a strong squad for the ground-breaking ODI series in Pakistan later this month.

Mohammad Kaif has been recalled to the side following a broken finger that kept him out of the VB Series. Rohan Gavaskar is the unfortunate batsman to miss out on the squad despite a promising start to his ODI career in Australia.

Ramesh Powar has been selected as the second spinner in the squad in place of Kumble who will miss the series due to a nagging shoulder injury. Powar's superior batting is believed to be the decisive factor in his selection.

Amit Bhandari was overlooked for the squad, while Ashish Nehra was included despite a cloud over his fitness. Zaheer Khan returns after missing the VB Series with a hamstring injury.

Sanjay Bangar has been dumped from the squad.

Parthiv Patel has been retained as the sole wicket-keeper in the squad despite pressure from Ajay Ratra. It seems likely, however, that Rahul Dravid will remain behind the stumps.

The full squad is:

Sourav Ganguly (c)
Sachin Tendulkar
Virender Sehwag
VVS Laxman
Rahul Dravid
Hemang Badani
Yuvraj Singh
Mohammad Kaif
Parthiv Patel
Ramesh Powar
Irfan Pathan
Murali Kartik
Zaheer Khan
Lakshmipathy Balaji
Ashish Nehra.
