Chris Davies Retires

Friday, March 5 2004

South Australian cricket has lost one of its finest young batsmen, with Chris Davies announcing his retirement from first-class cricket at the tender age of 25.

Davies played 25 first class matches for the state, in which he made 2 centuries at an average of 28.13. In his 38 domestic one-day games he finished with a highest score of 125 at an average of 26.94.

Despite his modest career record, Davies was seen as one of the brightest talents on the domestic circuit when he first emerged in 1997/98 following his progression through state and national under-age ranks.

A consistent shoulder problem proved the catalyst for his retirement, recently completing his fourth bout of surgery on his left shoulder. He felt he would not be able to return to the high standards he set himself.

The talented batsman's development was hindered by his constant battle with cystic fibrosis.
