Ankle Injury Floors Lee

Friday, March 5 2004

An untimely ankle injury to Brett Lee has disrupted Australian preparations heading into the first Test against Sri Lanka on Monday.

Lee's place in the side had been under some scrutiny before a strong performance in the first innings of the tour match managed to bowl just 3.4 overs in the second innings.

He went down to an ankle injury, the same ankle as to which he had surgery on in 2003. A notoriously slow rehabilitator, Lee's injury casts a doubt over his place in the starting XI for the first Test at Galle.

The ankle was said by physiotherapist Alex Kountouri to be 'stiff and sore'. It is believed his removal from the field was a precautionary measure to ensure no further damage was done.

The Australians will not announce their side for the first Test before the morning of the match, with competition for places at a premium.
