Day 3: NZ v Pakistan

Sunday, December 28 2003

A superb display of bowling by Ian Butler has seen New Zealand take the advantage on Day 3.

Pakistan began the day in a more positive mood with Yousuf Youhana and Inzamam-ul-Haq in good touch. Just as they were looked settled and getting on top of the bowling Jacob Oram managed to keep one low and had the Pakistan captain lbw for 34.

The next 6 wickets fell in the space of just 84 runs with Ian Butler returning career best figures of 6-46 leaving Pakistan dismissed for only 196. This meant New Zealand went into their 2nd innings with a 170 run lead.

New Zealand had 36 overs to get through to stumps and finished at 75-3 with Vincent who is really struggling with the bat being dismissed lbw to Akhtar for 4. Stephen Fleming and Richard Jones were the other batsmen dismissed for 24 and 7.

The two not out batsman at the close were Mark Richardson on 34 and the night watchman Daryl Tuffey on 0.

With a lead of 245 New Zealand will be looking for quick runs tomorrow with a possible target of 350 to set Pakistan.

The bad thing for the game is that showers are forcast for the whole of tomorrow meaning it could very well be a stop start day.
