Wasim Akram To Help Black Caps?

Friday, January 2 2004

New Zealand is set to appeal to former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram in an effort to come to terms with current star Shoaib Akhtar.

Shoaib took 17 wickets in the just-completed two-Test series against the Black Caps, helping rout the home side for just 103 in its second innings of the final Test to allow Pakistan to claim a 1-0 series win.

Speaking after the loss in Wellington, Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming said Wasim could be just the man to help him and his teammates better understand how to handle Shoaib’s lightning-quick reverse swing.

"Why not go to the best, and if we can get him, great," said Fleming.

"Certainly if we can get the best players in the world at that skill, then it would be great to learn. We don't get exposed to 150kmh inswingers that often. It's very hard to get facilities to practise that."
