Sri Lanka v Australia 1st ODI

Sunday, February 22 2004

Australia has beaten Sri Lanka by 84 runs in the first encounter thanks to a career best bowling performance by Brad Hogg who took 5/41 off 9.3 overs.

Australia's top order once again proved unstoppable with Gilchrist making 66, Hayden 40, Ponting 58, Martyn 27, Bevan 21. Symonds rounded off the innings in fine style making 37 off 20 overs in seeing Australia finish up on 262/6 which was the highest ever one-day score at Dambulla.

In reply Sri Lanka struggled due to some superb fielding alongside some accurate attacking bowling. Sangakkara and Jayawardene looked to get Sri Lanka back on track after the loss of three early wickets but when they fell within the space of seven balls Sri Lanka were gone. Hogg destroyed the lower order in taking career best figures of 5/41.
