Pura Cup: SA vs Vic

Wednesday, February 4 2004

Despite the best efforts of in-form South Australian seamer Paul Rofe, Victoria were able to claim outright points in the first first-class match since the death of David Hookes at the Adelaide Oval today.

Winning the toss and batting Victoria made strong progress, adding 102 for the first wicket before Matthew Mott fell on 51.

Continuing his good form of the summer, Brad Hodge contributed 81 in support of Matthew Elliott, who raised yet another first class hundred.

Paul Rofe, however, proved the catalyst for a massive Victorian collapse, losing the last 7 wickets for 67 runs. Rofe snared 7/66, his best analysis of the season and the second best of his career.

In reply, South Australia made just 262 - the failure of any batsman to follow on from a start crippled their chances of a first innings lead.

David Fitzgerald top scored with 47, while Shane Deitz added 46. Leg-spinner Cameron White finished with 4/43, while Mick Lewis claimed 3 wickets.

Despite losing 2 early wickets, Victoria were still able to muster a competitive total, with Hodge adding 86 and Cameron White 75, as well as David Hussey's 41.

John Davison claimed his best bowling figures of the season with 4/72 leaving the Redbacks 354 for outright points.

Despite the best efforts of seasoned performers Greg Blewett and Darren Lehmann (both 45), the Redbacks fell well short of the target.

Allan Wise continued his strong debut summer with 5/47, while Mathew Inness returned to form with 4/26.

Thanks to the outright win, Victoria requires just 2 points from its remaining 3 matches to ensure a Pura Cup Final at the MCG.
