WI v SA : 3rd ODI

Saturday, January 31 2004

The West Indies were denied a chance at a series win against South Africa when the third of five ODI's was rained out at Durban. Play was called off due to persistent showers with South Africa at 15/1 chasing just 169 to win, but facing some menacing seam bowling in challenging conditions.

Lara won the toss for the first time in the series and elected to bat first, but the effort was interrupted twice by showers, three overs apart. Eventually the innings was limited to forty overs and the competition levelled at that number of overs.

Once more the tourists didn't get a good start, with Gayle (1) labouring before falling to Nel. Chanderpaul (17) looked to struggle again, but Ricardo Powell (batting at three) provided a breath of fresh air to a struggling batting lineup.

Powell stroked an entertaining and impressive 50 from 71 balls and provided the only real impetus the West Indian innings of 147/8 from their forty overs. Sarwan (29), Lara (15) and Smith (12) got starts, but largely due to weather conditions, found batting extremely difficult against the home side pacers.

Kallis took two wickets in two balls in his final over (the last of the innings) and ended with 3-0-8-3.

South Africa were met with superb application from the West Indian seamers chasing an adjusted target of 169 and constantly received deliveries sound in line and length and alarming in bounce. Graeme Smith (4) perished top-edging a pull off Dillon (1/4) and Jacques Kallis (2 not out) joined Herschelle Gibbs (7 not out) to survive to the rains.

The series stands at 2-0, advantage South Africa.
