Mahmud retires after being sacked

Tuesday, January 27 2004

All-rounder Khaled Mahmud has announced his retirement from international cricket, after having been sacked as captain and over-looked to even be included in the squad for Bangladesh's forthcoming tour of Namibia and Zimbabwe, starting January 28.

The new captain, Habibul Bashar, was one of many players to urge Mahmud to re-consider, as he was a good influence on the discipline of the team, apart from having a wonderful personality. However, Mahmud has decided to stick to his decision.

Under Mahmud's reign, Bangladesh played 9 Test Matches and 15 ODIs, all of which ended in defeat.

However, the only time Bangladesh came even close to recording a maiden Test victory was under Mahmud, when Bangladesh ended up losing to Pakistan last year in Multan, by just one wicket.
