Shoaib signs for Durham

Friday, December 12 2003

Durham County Cricket Club today announced that Shoaib Akhtar, the Pakistani speedster who recorded a delivery of 100 mph during the World Cup, has signed for the club for season 2004.

He joins Herschelle Gibbs in committing himself to the county for next season in an appointment which reflects the ambition within the club.

Durham captain, Jon Lewis, says "Shoaib is one of the world's greatest bowlers and we are delighted that he is coming back to Durham for a second season as he was a prolific wicket-taker during his short spell with us last year."

Bob Jackson, Chairman of the club, added "The prospect of Shoaib Akhtar and Stephen
Harmison pairing up with the new ball is certainly mouth-watering and I
expect opening batsmen around the country will not fancy the Durham fixture
next year."
