Kallis Ton of History Ensures Draw

Sunday, March 14 2004

Jacques Kallis became the second cricketer to score a hundred in 5 consecutive Test matches behind Sir Donald Bradman, yet his unbeaten 150 could not avoid the inevitable draw in Hamilton.

Resuming Day 5 on 56, Kallis lost Neil McKenzie for 52 following a 107-run stand in what would prove the only New Zealand wicket of the day.

Off-spinner Paul Wiseman's breakthrough was his first of the match as Kallis compiled his 16th Test century and his 5th in 5 matches as well as his 92 in the first innings.

His career average now stands at an imposing 55.07 as his ascension towards greatness continued.

Gary Kirsten, meanwhile, struggled with the botched footmarks and surface craters on the pitch in making an uneasy unbeaten 34 before Graeme Smith declared as Kallis reached 150 - yet it was a declaration that offered no hope in the way of a result.

Hence, New Zealand opted to open the innings with Brendan McCullum in place of Mark Richardson with the keeper compiling a neat 19* to sit alongside his 50 on debut in the first innings.

The only inconvenience suffered by the Black Caps was the loss of Michael Papps as Andre Nel claimed his first wicket of the match. Scott Styris joined McCullum at the crease, scoring 3 before stumps were drawn on a largely placid day of Test cricket.
