Bangladesh v QAS XI

Saturday, June 28 2003

Bangladesh made an impressive start to their daunting tour of Australia, gaining the ascendancy after the first day of their opening match against a Queensland Academy of Sport Invitational side in Brisbane.

The QAS XI, consisting of mainly fringe Queensland cricketers and captained by young Australian representative, off-spinner Nathan Hauritz, were restricted to 201 in its first innings.

Bulls batsman Lee Carseldine continued on from his good form in the recently completed domestic season, compiling an aggressive 92. He was well supported by another Bulls squad member, all-rounder James Hopes (53), who received a rare opportunity to show off his batting talent.

Tight bowling from Tapash Baisya, who finished with 3/33, and captain Khaled Mahmud (2/34), ensured the home side was restricted to a mediocre total.

In reply, the pace trio of MacKenzie, Magoffin and Hopes each snared a wicket as Bangladesh reached stumps at 3/86. Mohammad Ashraful impressed with two sixes in his undefeated knock of 33, and may hold the key to his side posting a challenging total tomorrow.
