Tufnell Turns Away

Saturday, April 12 2003

Former English spinner Phil Tufnell has retired from first-class cricket.

Tufnell, a veteran of 42 Test matches, took 121 wickets at the highest level, including a brilliant 10-wicket match to win England the final Test of the 1997 Ashes Series being the obvious highlight.

Despite his prowess as a left-arm spinner, Tufnell never seemed to enjoy the full faith of the English selectors as they time and time against overlooked the classy tweaker.

He took an amazing 1057 first-class wickets throughout his 18 years at his county Middlesex.

His name was not always known for the right reasons, with the spinner often making headlines for the wrong reasons, highlighted by a trip to a Perth psychiatric hospital in 1993/94.

While his bowling often cause batsmen to look like fools, he was hardly a gifted bat and was more often than not scratchy in the field.

However, his will be remembered for a brilliant outfield catch taken during the 1993/94 Ashes Series, which prompted calls of ‘Air Tufnell’ throughout world cricket.

Tufnell will look to further his blossoming career in the media during his retirement years.
