Middlesex opening batsman Sven Koenig was the star as the new English season got underway today with a set of six UCCE (University Centre of Cricketing Excellence) matches.

Fenner's, Cambridge
Will Jefferson hit 125 at more than a run-a-ball as he put on 240 opening with Darren Robinson (89). Andy Flower chipped in with 91, with the lower order contributing three 40s. Nottinghamshire's Tom Savill took 3 wickets for Cambridge, although going at over six an over. Cambridge closed on 1/31.

Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
It was a similar story in Wales as Glamorgan batted down the order to rack up an imposing 434. Stephen James made 81, Matthew Maynard 92 and there were three other fifties. Cardiff reached the close at 0/13.

County Ground, Bristol
Opener Mark Alleyne and spinner Ian Fisher both made 90s as Gloucester piled up 381, Fisher and number 10 Martyn Ball putting on 77 for the tenth wicket. Bradford/Leeds were 7 without loss at stumps.

Trent Bridge, Nottingham
The University batted first, but the county side were just as dominant as anywhere else. Andrew Harris took 4/23 and Steve Elworthy 3/40 as Durham were skittled out for 165. Jamaican Delroy Taylor (82) provided the only resistance. Jason Gallian hit a near run-a-ball 126* as Nottinghamshire closed on 1/199.

The Parks, Oxford
Sven Koenig hit a majestic 166, and Andy Strauss and Owais Shah both contributed 70s as Middlesex totalled 4/364. Ex-Surrey batsman Graham Butcher was removed by Aussie Joe Dawes before close.

County Ground, Taunton
There was more dominance from county batsmen as Taunton proved as enjoyable to bat on as ever. New boy Jamie Bryant hit an unbeaten 109 and three other Somerset batsman broke 80. Richard Johnson bowled Northants' Rob White for 9 but Loughborough made 1/79 at the end of play.
