Sehwag Injury Worry

Thursday, July 24 2003

Leicestershire are waiting to discover whether India batsman Virender Sehwag will play for the county again this season.

The opener sustained a back injury which prevented him taking part in Saturday's Twenty20 Cup semi-final against Warwickshire, and ruled him out of this week's Frizzell County Championship clash with Essex.

Virender Sehwag's immediate future depends on the results of a scan, expected today (Wednesday).

Leicestershire coach Phil Whitticase said "We should know within the 24 hours what the situation is, Virender Sehwag will definitely not play in this game and we don't know if he will play again this season."

Meanwhile, general manager Kevin Hill has played down reports linking Leicestershire with a move for Australian pace bowler Matt Nicholson.

"We always have contingencies if we need to deal with events that may occur during the course of a year.

Depending on what happens to Virender Sehwag, we may need to fall back on some of those plans."
