Day 3: NZ vs SL

Tuesday, May 6 2003

It was an eventful third day's play in the second test between the Black Caps and the Sri Lankan's. Resuming the day on 75/4, the Kiwi's looked solid with the bat in hand, building towards a competitive first innings total.

Richardson who was 32 not out before the close, reached another half century in his successful career. The solid left hand opening batsman has served his country well, and this effort was no different.

Lokuarachchi though had the last laugh, as he dismissed Richardson for 55. Young all rounder, Jacob Oram impressed many with the bat, as he played the Sri Lankan spinners with ease. Alongside Robbie Hart, Oram bought up his 50 as New Zealand started to re-build.

Hart was caught in front by Muralitharan for 31, as Vettori came to the crease. Vettori, known for his skills with the bat as well as the ball, blended well with Oram to keep the scorecard ticking. Oram though was out soon after for a good knock of 71, dismissed once again by Lokuarachchi.

The loss of Oram had no effect on Vettori however, as he continued to reach another half century in Test Cricket. Vettori clearly showing his prowess as a capable lower order batsman in this test match.

As the score crossed 300, Vettori however was to be run out in what can be said was a bizarre fashion. It was once again Marvan Atapattu who before had crashed into Brian Lara, had now crashed into Vettori after attempting the run out. New Zealand were all out for a competitive 305.

Sri Lanka looking to chase down a fairly competitive total, were in the drivers seat. As Sangakkara and Jayasuriya opened the batting while an injured Atapattu was kept back in the pavilion. Sangakkara fell for 10 to Tuffey, as Jaysuriya put the Kiwi bowlers to the sword.

Jayasuriya bought up his half century in quick time, and along with Hashan Tillkeratne was still there, not out at the close of the day's play. A very interesting test match is poised, with a result still uncertain due to the abandonment of the first day.
