Damien Fleming Retires

Thursday, May 22 2003

Former Australian fast bowler Damien Fleming has ended his first-class career following 14 years of domestic and international cricket.

The talented swing and seam bowler, who took 6/37 on first-class debut, played 114 first-class matches for South Australia, Victoria, Warwickshire and Australia.

He played 20 Test matches and 88 ODI's, taking 75 and 134 wickets respectively at the highest level.

His career included a World Cup winner's medal in 1999, a final in 1996, a hat-trick on Test debut as well as numerous man-of-the-match awards in both forms of the game.

His retirement co-incides with his appointment to the head coaching staff at the Commonwealth Cricket Academy in Adelaide.

He takes over the role from Wayne Phillips, who is now the coach of South Australia, ironically Fleming’s final state.

Fleming's 2002-03 summer was cut short by major shoulder surgery following a poor summer the year before with his state of 13 years, Victoria.
