Shane Lee Retires

Friday, May 2 2003

New South Wales and Australian all-rounder Shane Lee has announced his retirement from first class cricket.

Shane, older brother of current Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, played 73 first class matches for New South Wales, as well as another twenty for English counties Somerset and Worcestershire.

He also took to the field on 59 occasions for the Blues in the one-day arena, captaining his native state in 13 first class and 14 one-day matches.

Lee managed 5071 runs at 39.31 in four-day games, including twelve centuries and a top score of 184 not out. He also took 150 wickets at an average of 40.52.

Shane Lee made 45 One-Day International appearances for Australia between 1995 and 2001. He scored 477 runs at 17.66 with an impressive strike rate of 95.40. He claimed 48 wickets at 25.93, including a best of 5/33.

Persistent injuries are believed to have been a major influence on Lee's decision. His appearances at state level have been severely limited in the past two seasons as a result of back and knee injuries that particularly hampered his ability to bowl.

Lee will now pursue business interests outside of cricket.
