Vaas signs for Hants

Thursday, July 31 2003

Chaminda Vaas, the Sri Lankan left-arm seamer has signed for Hampshire, replacing Wasim Akram who recently left the club due to ill-health. Vaas, who has for some time now been Sri Lanka's senior pace bowler, has not yet arrived in the country, however his signed contract has been faxed to the club from Sri Lanka. The 29 year old showed why he is rated as one of the most prolific international bowlers during the World Cup, taking a record 23 wickets, including a hat-trick in the first three balls of the match against Bangladesh. He is just as impressive in the five-day version of the game, having taken 216 wickets in 68 matches. Heath Streak was apparently approached initially, however he declined the offer.
