Thursday, July 24 2003

Nottinghamshire's Bilal Shafayat will again captain England U19 in the first Test against their South African counterparts at Headingley, starting on 1 August.

Bilal Shafayat is one of four county regulars named in the 12-man squad. Last time around Bilal Shafayat led the side during their winter tour of Australia, when they lost the Youth Test series 2-1, after a resounding first test victory, later in the tour they also went down 4-1 in the One Day series.

England U19 coach Tim Boon said
"We have a well-balanced squad and real strength in depth so we are optimistic of our chances.

Since the advent of the county academies, the young lads coming through seem to have more advanced skills for their age and they are a lot more mature in their knowledge of the game.

Standards have risen and that can only be good for the game here."
