Virender Sehwag Heads Home

Leicestershire have cancelled the contract of Indian batting star Virender Sehwag by mutual consent.

Sehwag has been suffering from a sore back recently and the result of a recent scan has revealed a disc problem.

Virender Sehwag has therefore been told to take a complete break from the game for six weeks and will return home in the hope of regaining his fitness in time for the home series against New Zealand in October.

Leicestershire Coach Phil Whitticase said

"In these circumstances, we have both agreed that it is in his and the club's best interests that he returns home to link up with the Indian team's medical people.

His long-term health and fitness are of paramount importance. We are very grateful to Virender for the consideration he has shown to the club, and are naturally disappointed that he will not be available to us for the rest of the season."

Virender Sehwag scored 478 runs at 47.80 in six Championship appearances for the club, including two centuries the highest being 137.

It is now thought that Leicestershire are targeting Australian pace bowler Matt Nicholson as his replacement, who has 146 first-class wickets at an average of 29 to his name.
