Womens County Champs

Sunday, August 3 2003

The Frizzell Womens County Championship took place last week in Cambridge with Sussex coming out as Champions.

The competition was spread into three divisions with the bottom ranked teams in Division One and Two getting relegated while the top ranked teams from Division Two and Three being promoted. While Clare Connor's Sussex side won Division One, Lancashire and Durham were the two promoted sides winning Division Two and Three.

Berkshire were the surprise relegation from Division One this year, having finished runners up last year and come in with what looked like a stronger side. Less surprisingly Hertfordshire were relegated from Division Two.

Division Two was a very tight finish with Middlesex needing the undefeated Lancashire to lose on last day, however Lancs shared the points with Staffordshire when rain set in.

Next year the championship is only to include two divisions so there was an extra incentive for the Division Two and Three sides to play well.

The standings were:

Division One:
Sussex
Nottinghamshire
Kent
Yorkshire
Surrey
Berkshire

Division Two:
Lancashire
Middlesex
Staffordshire
Somerset
Hampshire
Hertfordshire

Division Three:
Durham
Derbyshire
Warwickshire
Cheshire
Essex
Northamptionshire
