Controlled Memory

Saturday, August 2 2003

Indian ODI pair Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh have been refused a start in the Ben Hollioake Memorial Trust match by the Board of Cricket Control India, the BCCI.

Kaif and Yuvraj, members of Indian's World Cup final side, have been denied the right to play in the match which will remember former England all-rounder Ben Hollioake, who died tragically in a motor accident in Perth last April.

The BCCI (Board of Cricket Control India), however, have sadly opted to block the move for the pair to play in the match.

Rather than playing in the memorial match, Kaif and Yuvraj will be enforced spectators following the decision that Indian cricketers do not take part in charity matches.

Moreover, in a despicable turn, politics is said to be the main reason the pair are not allowed to take part in the match.

With India and Pakistan involved in constant, well-documented hostilities, the idea of Indians playing with Pakistanis in an Asian selected XI has become bigger than the actual purpose of the match, to remember the life of Ben Hollioake.

Pakistan and India have refused to engage on the cricket pitch since the World Cup.

The Ben Hollioake match will take place on the 9 August, and proceeds will go to the Ben Hollioake Memorial Trust.
