Gavaskar To Replace Tendulkar

Monday, September 6 2004

Rohan Gavaskar has been named in India's ICC champions trophy squad in place of the injured Sachin Tendulkar. Team physio Andrew Leipus said Tendulkar's tennis elbow had not responded adequately to treatment and that a replacement would need to be selected.

It is alleged that the selectors had initially chosen Dinesh Mongia, who has been in blistering form of late, averaging 80 for his county Lancashire. The news was then delivered to Mongia, who was asked to join the Indian squad. However, the BCCI reportedly overruled the decision and notified Mongia that a mistake had been made and that he wouldn't, afterall, be joining the squad.

Gavaskar, 28, has done nothing spectacular of late and has done little to push for selection, scoring only 58 runs in his last five international matches at an average of just 11.8.

India play their first match of the ICC champions trophy against Kenya on the 11th of September.
