Hodge replaces injured Ponting

Friday, September 24 2004

Top order batsman Brad Hodge has been named as injured captain Ricky Ponting's replacement for Australia's much awaited tour of India.

Ponting, who has already been ruled out of the first Test of the four match series as a result of an injured thumb, might miss even more action depending on the speed of healing, and thus the selection of Hodge as a cover. He fractured his left thumb while fielding in the slips during Australia's semi-final loss to England in the Champions Trophy.

Hodge has earned his call as a result of consistent performances over the last few seasons for both his state team in Australia - Victoria - and his English county side - Leicestershire.

As expected, vice-captain Adam Gilchrist has been named as the skipper in Ponting's absence.

Australia play their first Test against India at Bangalore from the 6th of October, prior to which they will also compete in a warm-up match against Board President's XI at Hyderabad.
