B-NZ: Hosts crushed in Kyle's Mills

Wednesday, November 3 2004

Bangladesh limped to a woeful 138-run defeat in Chittagong's MA Aziz stadium. Bangladesh reduced the Kiwis to 224 all out, mainly thanks to Chris Cairns' 74, before Bangladesh imploded to 86 all out, with Kyle Mills taking four top order wickets.

Bangladesh started strongly, with ODI debutant Peter Fulton falling to the 17-year-old medium pacer Nazmul Hossain in the second over. Nazmul then bowled the other opener Nathan Astle and the end of the tenth over, and Manjural Islam Rana accounted for Hamish Marshall in the following over.

New Zealand continued to stutter as Craig McMillan and Brendon McCullum fell cheaply before Chris Cairns joined Scott Styris in the middle, who revitalised the innings before Styris (43) was run out by Rajin Saleh. Chris Harris and Daniel Vettori then failed to contribute, before Cairns brought a semblance of respectability to the total by clubbing four sixes off the final three overs, until Nazmul struck twice in first two balls of the last over, bowling Cairns and having Andre Adams caught by Khaled Mahmud.

With an eminently reachable target of 225, Bangladesh then imploded as Kyle Mills reduced the Tigers to 27-4 in a plethora of indiscrete strokeplay. Returning skipper Habibul Bashar, Manjural, Mahmud and vetern Rafique, who had bowled tightly earlier to concede just 28 runs from his 10 overs, were the only men to make double figures in a limp capitulation, skipper Dan Vettori taking 3-9 at the death.
