Ind vs Ban: Kumble Breaks Record

Saturday, December 11 2004

Emerging left arm fast bowler, Irfan Pathan demolished Bangladesh's top order and champion leg spinner, Anil Kumble went past Kapil Dev's record of 434 test wickets to give India the definitive edge heading into day two of the first test.

India won the toss and looking at a damp pitch decided to bowl first without any hesitation. Irfan Pathan got the match going in India's direction straight away as he had Javed Omar lbw for just 4 runs.

Pathan then struck once more with the wicket of Nafis Iqbal (20) as Iqbal was also lbw and Bangladesh were in a bit of strife at 2/29. The very next ball, Pathan picked up Rajin Saleh for 0 as the young left arm swing bowler was on a hat trick for the first time in his career.

Pathan didn't achieve the hat trick, but Bangladesh consolidated largely due to the efforts of Mohammad Ashraful. Ashraful with the help of Khaled Mashud guided Bangladesh past 50. But disaster struck again for Bangladesh as Mashud was dismissed by Zaheer Khan for 8.

Ashraful then began to play his strokes and alongside Manjural Islam Rana guided Bangladesh past the 100 run mark. But India were not going to be denied against a weak batting lineup as Irfan Pathan dismissed Rana for 24 and picked up his fourth wicket for the innings.

The very next ball, Pathan had another victim and was once again on a hat trick for the second time in this match. Pathan dismissed Mushfiqur Rahman for 0 and claimed his fifth wicket for the match.

Gritty spin bowler and lower order batsman, Mohammad Rafique partnered Mohammad Ashraful and the duo consolidated and provided Bangladesh with a solid 65 run partnership. Ashraful went past 50 and Rafique went past 40 as the pair were looking accomplished at the crease.

But India clawed their way back into the game once more, this time through champion leg spinner Anil Kumble. Kumble dismissed Rafique for 47 and had broken Kapil Dev's record of 434 test wickets and became the highest wicket taker in Indian Cricket history.

The very next ball Kumble got Tapash Baisya for 0 and the champion leg spinner was also on a hat trick. Kumble didn't achieve the hat trick, but soon after Mashrafe was run out for 7 and Bangladesh were all out for 184 when play was called off due to bad light.

Brief Score Summary:

Bangladesh (1st Innings): 184 All Out (Ashraful 60*, Rafique 47, Pathan 5/45, Zaheer 2/51, Kumble 2/45)
