Jeff Wilson back after 12 years!

Wednesday, January 12 2005

Former All Black Jeff Wilson has been named in the New Zealand squad for the three limited-overs matches against a World XI starting on January 22nd.

Since announcing his retirement from all rugby in May 2002 he has been playing for Otago in the domestic State Shield and State Championship competitions.

This season in the State Shield limited-overs competition he has picked up seven wickets in four games at an average of 17.85 and scored 82 runs at 16.40 with a strike rate of 110.81.

Wilson last played for New Zealand in the 1992/1993 season as a 19 year old and put together consistent performances against Australia before turning to rugby. His highlight was hitting 44 not out off 28 balls in helping New Zealand beat Australia by 3 wickets in the 4th ODI of that series.

Ian Butler has missed out on selection for the series because of a bulging disc in his back but otherwise it is the same squad that played the Chappell-Hadlee trophy in December.

The full squad is:

Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Mathew Sinclair, Scott Styris, Hamish Marshall, Chris Cairns, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Jeff Wilson, Daniel Vettori, Kyle Mills, Daryl Tuffey.
