Australia announce VB Series squad

Saturday, January 8 2005

Australia announced their 14-man squad for the upcoming VB Series between Australia, the West Indies and Pakistan, though Michael Clarke's participation is in doubt due to a foot injury. The squad contained no surprises, being identical to that which drew 1-1 with New Zealand in the recent Chappell-Hadlee series.

Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns hinted at the possibility of using the players on a rotational basis, saying that "Choosing a 14-man squad will provide the opportunity for players who play both forms of the game, to have a break from time to time throughout the series." The series involves each team playing six preliminary games before a best-of-three finals series between the top two teams from the preliminary stages.

David Hussey looms as a possible replacement if Michael Clarke is unable to participate, backing up a quickfire 83* for Victoria against the West Indies with an innings of 128 for Australia 'A'. Nathan Bracken will replace Brett Lee for Australia 'A' against Pakistan after Lee was announced in Australia's squad.

Australia's full squad is as follows:
1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Damien Martyn, 5 Darren Lehmann, 6 Michael Clarke, 7 Andrew Symonds, , 8 Jason Gillespie, 9 Michael Kasprowicz, 10 Glenn McGrath, 11 Brett Lee, 12 Simon Katich, 13 Shane Watson, 14 Brad Hogg.
