Sri Lanka/CD Rained Off

Wednesday, December 22 2004

Sri Lanka's opening game of their tour of New Zealand was rained off yesterday with Sri Lanka 20/2 in pursuit of 221 for victory over Central Districts.

Sri Lanka won the toss and inserted the home side at New Plymouth's Yarrow Stadium in overcast conditions and they got off to the best possible start with Nuwan Zoysa clean bowling Craig Spearman and the in form Jamie How for two runs a piece.

Matthew Sinclair was the next to depart for five and with the score at 43/3 after 18 overs Central were in big trouble.

Jacob Oram and Ross Taylor kicked on however with Oram at his best hitting the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts and together with Ross Taylor they put on 123 for the fourth wicket before Taylor was forced to retire hurt.

With a rain delay shortly afterwards Central again lost their way losing four wickets for 25 runs but some late hitting from Glen Sulzberger and Ewan Thompson got them to a respectable 220/7 after 50 overs.

Jacob Oram top scored with 74 from 78 balls with four fours and three sixes. Nuwan Zoysa and Nuwan Kulasekara, the Sri
Lankan opening bowlers, were the pick of the bowlers taking 2/22 and 1/27.

Sri Lanka like Central lost early wickets and were 15/2 when heavy rain forced the players from the field and they were unable to make it back out with the match being called off at 9:00pm local time.

There was concern in the Sri Lankan camp last night with Nuwan Zoysa dislocating his finger while bowling and is likely to be out of the first ODI against New Zealand on the 26th of December.

Sri Lanka now head to Hamilton where they will play Northern Districts in an one-dayer tomorrow.
