Australia Recall Katich

Wednesday, December 1 2004

Australia have brought Simon Katich into the one-day squad for the three upcoming limited overs matches against New Zealand.

The selectors preferred Katich to Ian Harvey in the only change from the party of 14 that made it to the semi finals of the ICC Champions Trophy in England.

Harvey is continuing his comeback from a groin injury and the selectors have decided to give him more time to recover, meaning that Katich gets another run in the side after being left out of the recent Test side that white-washed New Zealand.

"Despite the disappointing outcome of the ICC Champions Trophy we felt at this stage there wasn't a great need to make major changes," said chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns.

"With Ian Harvey on his way back from injury, we felt it was important to give him some more time at state level before considering him for international duties.

"Katich performed well in his return to one-day Cup cricket and deserves his place in the squad. He is a quality limited-overs batsman who can bat in a number of positions, and also offers us some variety with his bowling."

The selctors have also defended their decision to pick a large squad of 14 for just the three matches due to the fact that the Australians have a long summer ahead and want to give their players a rest where possible.

The full squad for the three match series with New Zealand is:

  • R Ponting (capt)
  • A Gilchrist (wk)
  • M Clarke
  • M Hayden
  • D Lehmann
  • S Katich
  • D Martyn
  • S Watson
  • A Symonds
  • B Hogg
  • J Gillespie
  • B Lee
  • M Kasprowicz
  • G McGrath
