Watson named Scotland captain
07 Apr 2007
By: Sean Bennett

Ryan Watson has been announced as the Scotland captain following Craig Wright's resignation two weeks ago.

Wright, who captained the side for 5 years, decided to step down after Scotland lost all three of their World Cup games and went home bottom of Group A.

The 30-year-old Watson, born in Zimbabwe, who will succeed him, has an impressive cricketing record. He represented South Africa Schools "B" before moving to Scotland and has scored the third fastest List A century ever for the Scots against Somerset in 2003.

"It's a nice time to take on the role because there are some exciting times ahead," Watson commented about his appointement.

"It's a little bit daunting given the success the side has had over the past few years, but there will be some new cricketers coming through over time and it's about overseeing that change. I will try to pick up where Craig left off, bring in some of my own ideas and hopefully achieve the same level of success."

Watson will lead Scotland in the English domestic One Day tournament known as the Friends Provdent Trophy, before returning to Soputh Africa to take on the World's best once again in the inaugural ICC Twenty20 World Cup in September.
