Proteas await security review
15 Aug 2006
By: James Nixon

South Africa have decided to remain in Sri Lanka until an independent security evaluation is done on whether it is safe for the team to remain in the country or not.

Following the bomb blast, the South African team have wanted to pull out of the tri-series and return home.

However, various officials have put pressure on the team, which has forced a re-think of their decision.

Brian Basson who is the Cricket South Africa's Cricket Affair's General Manager said "Cricket, police and security officials have assured us that the highest levels of security in Sri Lanka are now in place.

"We have also been advised that all indications are that the team, and cricket in general, do not appear to be targets in the civil unrest in Sri Lanka.

"The team will remain in Sri Lanka while the upgraded security measures are being evaluated."

Journalist Neil Manthorp has also come out and told media that "Several players have said to me that they will seriously consider going home with or without the support or approval of their board."

It is however different between the senior players and the younger players, who see this tour as the perfect chance to show their skills to the selectors with many senior players out injured.

If South Africa do pull out of the tour without International Cricket Council approval, they could face a US$2 million fine.

Sri Lankan Cricket have said that if South Africa pull out, they would be keen for a head to head series against India.
