NZ Defeat Bangladesh; Again
06 Jan 2008
By: Archie Mac

Despite a much better fight from Bangladesh, New Zealand still cruised to a nine wicket win in the first Test of the two match series.

Openers Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique took their over night partnership of 148 onto 161 before the former was cleaned bowled by Kyle Mills for an entertaining 84, and just six runs later the latter was caught in the slips off the bowling of Chris Martin for 74.

Despite a fighting partnership from the Captain Mohammad Ashraful (23) and Shahriar Nafees (28) which took the score to 205, Iain O?Brian started the collapse; first the Captain was caught and then O?Brian claimed Aftab Ahmed for a duck to make it 205-5.

Daniel Vettori then snuffed out any real chance of Bangladesh making a match of the game, as he tore through the visitors middle order, reducing the tourists to 232-7. Soon after Vettori trapped the stubborn Shahriar Nafees in front after a two hour vigil (252-8), and the last real fight left the Bangladesh team.

Needing only 39 to win, the Black Caps seemed determined to finish the game in the quickest time possible; scoring at 4.77 an over they lost just one wicket on their way to a comprehensive victory inside three days.

Bangladesh 137
Tamim Iqbal 53, Shahriar Nafees 23
Chris Martin 4-64, Jacob Oram 3-23

New Zealand 357
Matthew Bell 107, Jacob Oram 117

Bangladesh 254
Tamim Iqbal 84, Junaid Siddique 74
Daniel Vettori 4-70

New Zealand 39-1
