3-day defeat for Bangladesh

Bangladesh suffered yet another innings defeat against Sri Lanka, losing by an innings and 69 runs.

131-4 overnight and 129 runs in arrears Bangladesh lost Mohammad Ashraful early. The 21-year old edged an outswinger from Chaminda Vaas after a short spell of clever swing bowling. After the addition of 3 more runs, nightwatchman Shahadat Hossain was beaten all ends up by an inswinger from Vaas, showing why he’s not in the team for his batting.

Following that 2 wicket spell from Vaas it was Sri Lanka’s spinners who did the rest of the work. Aftab Ahmed and Khaled Mashud offered some resistance with a partnership of 33, but a flighted delivery from Herath found an edge, and Samaraweera took yet another catch at slip to send Aftab Ahmed back to the pavilion.

Coming around the wicket, Muttiah Muralitharan trapped the wicket-keeper batsman Lbw; bringing a 22 run partnership with Mohammad Rafique to an end. Rafique was soon bowled through the gate by his fellow left arm spinner Herath, and when Jayasuriya held on to a simple catch off Syed Rasel at mid-on, Bangladesh’s fate was confirmed.

With Bangladesh yet again losing by an innings, it may provide the ICC with some serious food for thought with Bangladesh’s future international schedule.
